Summary

The acclaimed author of Gods of Jade and Shadow returns with a mesmerising feminist re-imagining of Gothic fantasy, in which a young socialite discovers the haunting secrets of a beautiful old mansion in 1950s Mexico。

He is trying to poison me。 You must come for me, Noemi。 You have to save me。

When glamorous socialite Noemi Taboada receives a frantic letter from her newlywed cousin begging to be rescued from a mysterious doom, it's clear something is desperately amiss。 Catalina has always had a flair for the dramatic, but her claims that her husband is poisoning her and her visions of restless ghosts seem remarkable, even for her。

Nice, spooky, tidy little gothic horror。 Enojyed!

It was quite a ride and I loved it。 The main character was great and smart and the way that she grow through the end of the story was superb。 The whole gothic and spooky atmosphere was on point。

Interesting but the story felt as if it was dragged a bit too much。 The anthropology references didn't really connect to the story。 Ending is very unexpected。 Interesting but the story felt as if it was dragged a bit too much。 The anthropology references didn't really connect to the story。 Ending is very unexpected。 。。。more

Did not finish。Just couldn’t buy into the mushroom prolonging life plot line。 Not my cup of tea。

I really liked this book。 Going into it you know it's a Gothic (duh read the title) but I was in suspense the whole time waiting for the root, cause, whatever to come to light。 The beginning was a little slow for me, but it builds into such an intricate story that is told really well。 You want to yell at Noemi because you know she is in danger, but you don't know what from。 Definitely recommend I really liked this book。 Going into it you know it's a Gothic (duh read the title) but I was in suspense the whole time waiting for the root, cause, whatever to come to light。 The beginning was a little slow for me, but it builds into such an intricate story that is told really well。 You want to yell at Noemi because you know she is in danger, but you don't know what from。 Definitely recommend 。。。more

Nothing much to say!!!It was so interesting in the beginning。 The story was grabbing me, but toward the end it lost me。 I didn’t like the ending 😑🤷🏻‍♀️

Meh。 Too much sexual assault。 A seemingly strong protagonist at the outset who doesn’t know when to leave。 It’s very frustrating when a “haunted house” story relies on reasonable people not getting the heck out when they should。 Vivid imagery throughout, maybe too vivid when paired with the creepiness。

I found this literary goth story fun to read and is it more mystery than scary。 I especially appreciated the Mexico silver mining history。 It didn't make me want to seek out more novels in the horror genre。 I found this literary goth story fun to read and is it more mystery than scary。 I especially appreciated the Mexico silver mining history。 It didn't make me want to seek out more novels in the horror genre。 。。。more

I was so excited to read the book and I wanted to love it。 Slow to start and the start was long。 Ending was what I’d hoped to experience through more of the story。 I liked it but it would be one I won’t tell people it is a must read! I wouldn’t read a sequel either。 Although, it would be great on the screen。

Plus, I am an anxious soul, so it felt good to read about someone who was naturally chilled out。But, she was a smoker, and I think, smoking shouldn’t really be normalized, but in a way, the book did that, by showing that the main lead smokes without guilt。 Apart from that, I liked her very much。The author kept describing how a character - Francis - seemed highly unattractive to Noemi - the main lead, and kept emphasizing on this fact rather frequently to a point where it seemed a tad bit mean。 However, as I kept reading, I genuinely started liking Francis mostly for his kind and understanding nature, and it made me realize what a brave step the author had taken by not describing the love interest as ‘handsome’。Readers don’t like reading about the protagonist if they’re not good looking - at least that’s what a lot of publishers tell authors when they’re writing a book, and yet Silvia wrote about a character, expressed how he’s not what we would call attractive, and still made us love his kind and timid personality, and I, as a reader, appreciated the step she dared to take。After a lot of thought, I have decided to give this book a 4。5/5 stars as even though it was dark and also sick - the author did warn us about it, she told us to be careful because it’s going to be a stomach twister - it did look up to its expectations。 Mexican Gothic was indeed gothic。 Please keep in mind the Trigger warnings before you choose to read this book: Violence, Rape, Incest。 。。。more

It not badly written。 I just didn't like the way it went from "normal" to supernatural。 It's not that I don't like supernatural it just was too abrupt of a change during the story for my taste。 It not badly written。 I just didn't like the way it went from "normal" to supernatural。 It's not that I don't like supernatural it just was too abrupt of a change during the story for my taste。 。。。more

Very creative and engaging story。 I enjoyed the gender swap of hero and damsel-in-distress。 It feels like a YA novel a bit; while the writing leans towards being poetic in a lovely way, it is rather clusmy in other places。 Still, worth the read and quite enjoyable。

Monique

Really enjoyed it and I a not much into supernatural but it is well done。 Part mythology, part scientific and definitely creative。

Muy, muy bueno Es un libro bastante opresivo que tiene momentos muy desconcertantes porque tampoco voy a decir que me dio miedo pero si se disfruta de la atmósfera creada en el libro y el giro argumental me pareció bastante original e interesante。

I was enjoying this read until the 'gothic' overtones really took over three-quarters of the way through。 I am not much for fantasy and in particular, the idea of a 'gloom' living within the walls, floors and ceilings of a house controlling it's inhabitants was just too much。 I was enjoying this read until the 'gothic' overtones really took over three-quarters of the way through。 I am not much for fantasy and in particular, the idea of a 'gloom' living within the walls, floors and ceilings of a house controlling it's inhabitants was just too much。 。。。more

A good, but frustrating read。I’ve had this on my kindle since last year, and it was finally time to dive in。 Amazingly I haven’t been spoiled for the book, so I was heading into this with no clue as to what I’d encounter… and it sort of delivered。 The author managed to evoke a rather creepy gothic atmosphere in that decaying great house which was perfect。 Then there was that family。 When we first meet them, I agree with Noemi that these snobs are off, yet there is nothing that she can definitive A good, but frustrating read。I’ve had this on my kindle since last year, and it was finally time to dive in。 Amazingly I haven’t been spoiled for the book, so I was heading into this with no clue as to what I’d encounter… and it sort of delivered。 The author managed to evoke a rather creepy gothic atmosphere in that decaying great house which was perfect。 Then there was that family。 When we first meet them, I agree with Noemi that these snobs are off, yet there is nothing that she can definitively pinpoint to validate her initial feelings。 Virgil and Florence gave had me questioning their actions, Francis was different, but toed the family line。 And then there was Howard。 He was vile。 His conversations and leering glances at Noemi were gross。 He had a creep factor of 20/10, and honestly, I would have left after the first night! Alas, she stays, and things get serious。 As the situation devolves, everything hits the fan and Noemi’s reality becomes a surreal nightmare as she gets swept up in this family’s crazy secret。 Honestly, it would have been a four or five star read but for the moments where things waffle on a bit too much, losing the pacing, the characters fall into repetitive rut, and the occasional interactions between Noemi and the townsfolk don’t have quite the impact I would have liked as she tries to untangle the history of High Place。 Still that ending confrontation was rather unique and had me gripped (no spoilers, but it was great), yet it just couldn’t make up for the rather ambiguous ending。 3。5 stars 🌟 。。。more

Mexican Gothic is a dark mystery bordering on horror/goth genre and if you are a fan of books such as Rebecca by Daphne du Maurier or We Have Always Lived in the Castle by Shirley Jackson then this one is right up your alley。 Starting with a brief introduction about the book, we see a frivolous and stubborn socialite making a begrudged and lonesome journey from the heart of the Mexican City to the secluded hillside to visit an unwell cousin。 Although what starts out as a concerned and inquisitiv Mexican Gothic is a dark mystery bordering on horror/goth genre and if you are a fan of books such as Rebecca by Daphne du Maurier or We Have Always Lived in the Castle by Shirley Jackson then this one is right up your alley。 Starting with a brief introduction about the book, we see a frivolous and stubborn socialite making a begrudged and lonesome journey from the heart of the Mexican City to the secluded hillside to visit an unwell cousin。 Although what starts out as a concerned and inquisitive visit slowly unravels into suffocating living situation that keeps Noemi Taboada muddled between reality and hallucination。I finished this book in a day in a sitting, in fact I breezed through the book with my coffee and my meals left untouched。 Yes, it was that engrossing。 Noemi is a character I could completely relate to。 She is one who will not take nonsense from anyone and isn’t afraid to call out anyone’s impetuous behavior。 Whether it is father or her cousin’s in-laws, Noemi isn’t scare to speak her mind。 She is a Main Character I was absolutely rooting for。 Silvia Moreno-Garcia didn’t shy away from creating the most fierce and real characters albeit a tad bit crazy and horrific。 Whether it is the timid Francis or the stifling Florence or even the absentminded Catalina, each of them were extremely well-written and believable。 Even the characterization of the house where Noemi’s cousin, Catalina, lived is so well-crafted that you can feel its walls closing in, the dullness seeping through the pages and almost enveloping you, the reader。The author has also built a very fast-paced story line that keeps the readers craving for the next page。 The book isn’t dull for a minute and the description of the locales and the house doesn’t get monotonous instead paints a vivid picture in the minds of the readers。 I could almost see the distant hills, treacherous muddy paths and the gloomy cemetery through the pages。This book is definitely going to get you out of a reading slump or spruce up your reading。 I can’t wait to read more of Moreno-Garcia’s works。 。。。more

I have very mixed feeling on this book。 I liked someof the dark and moody elements of this book。 The infest and cannibalism was vile。 The scene where they are the baby made me want to vomit。 I liked Noemi and I’m excited to discuss this book with my book club。
